Calming Corners: In-home Sanctuaries

In my house, the most effective steps towards calm that we have taken is creating calming corners. We inadvertently created one for my son when we piled his plethora of stuffed dogs in a corner on the far side of his bedroom. I noticed he would go there when he was upset and just lay amongst them, sometimes talking to them. It seemed to help him and he started to calm down much quicker. So I gave it a try; creating my own calming corner. It was nice to have my own little sanctuary to get away from not just the physical but mental noise of the day.

I highly recommend creating one as maintaining mental well-being is so essential. Mental health affects your physical health, quality of life and impacts your relationships. One of the best ways to calm the mind and find a moment of peace is to have a designated space designed to accomplish just that..

Whether you’re creating your own tranquil retreat or one for your child; the first step to a calming corner is selecting the perfect spot. Look for a quiet area in your home where one can escape the hustle and bustle. It could be a corner of a bedroom, a nook in the living room, or even a space on your balcony. The key is to find a place where you feel undisturbed, comfortable and most importantly for kids, safe.

Comfort is paramount in a calming corner. Choose seating that is cozy and inviting, whether it’s a plush armchair, a bean bag, or a pile of soft cushions and blankets. The idea is to have a place where you can sink in and feel at ease.

A calming corner should be free from distractions and clutter. Keep the space tidy and only include items that promote relaxation and positivity. Think of incorporating elements that engage your senses and consider adding:

  • Soft Lighting: Use lamps, fairy lights, or candles (for adults) to create a warm, inviting glow.
  • Aromatherapy: Use essential oils or scented candles (again, adults) to fill the space with calming scents like lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus.
  • Textures: Include soft blankets, cushions, rugs and even stuffed animals to add a tactile element to the space.
  • Music: Create a playlist of soothing music or nature sounds to help you unwind.

Both my son’s and my bedrooms have Google Mini’s where we play relaxing music. He has an aromatherapy machine and I use candles. These also help at bedtime which can sometimes be a struggle.

A calming corner is an excellent place to practice mindfulness and self-care. Consider adding tools that facilitate this focus such as books and meditation aids. For young children, this could be a good place to have a feelings poster or grounding aid.

Make a calming corner unique to the user by adding personal touches that make them happy. This could be photos of loved ones, artwork that inspires, or a favorite stuffed friend. Personalizing the space will make it more inviting and special.

Remember, a calming corner is a sanctuary. If you make one for your child, involve them in the process, explain what the space will be for and ask them for input. Though it might be tempting to send a child to a calming corner when emotions run high it is not a place for punishment. It should be a safe retreat no matter who it’s for. If your child needs help using it (most likely at first), invite them to sit in the corner with you, re-explain its purpose and do some breathing exercises.

As for yourself…remember a calming corner is a sanctuary. Retreat to it in times of stress to find your own calm or every morning to start the day in meditation. It is your space and your time. Whatever you do, make sure to promote positive mental well-being and self-care habits.
